The Transformation

I spent nearly a decade believing something was fundamentally wrong with me.

From age 15 into my early twenties, I hovered between 25-30% body fat. BMI in the obese range. I'd catch my reflection and look away. I avoided pools, dreaded summer, and wore loose shirts hoping no one would notice what I was hiding underneath. I learned how to angle my body in photos—or just avoid them entirely.

I was tired all the time. Not regular tired. The kind of tired where you wake up exhausted, drag yourself through the day, and wonder if this is just what life feels like now. I'd see other guys my age with energy and confidence and assume they knew something I didn't. That they were built differently. That I'd missed some window and it was too late for me.

And I was trying—that's what made it so demoralizing. I did every routine I could find. Hours in the gym, wandering between machines, mimicking whatever I'd seen in a magazine or read on some early internet forum. I'd leave drenched in sweat, convinced I'd done something meaningful. Then weeks would pass. Months. The scale wouldn't move. My clothes still fit the same. I'd look in the mirror and feel like a fraud—like I was performing the role of someone who worked out without ever actually becoming one.

I'd start a new diet on Monday with genuine hope. By Thursday I was white-knuckling through every meal, obsessing over food, snapping at people I cared about. By the weekend I'd crack, eat everything in sight, and spend Sunday night swearing I'd try harder next time. I thought discipline was the problem. That I was weak. That other people could do this and I just... couldn't.

I bought supplements I couldn't afford, thinking this one would finally unlock something. I tried eating "clean" without understanding what that actually meant. I tracked calories until it consumed my mental energy, then gave up and ate with reckless guilt. Nothing worked. And every failure compounded the shame.

The worst part wasn't the weight. It was the confusion. The loneliness of struggling in silence while pretending everything was fine. The feeling that everyone else had access to some secret I couldn't crack. That maybe I just wasn't built for this. That my body was broken in some way I couldn't fix.

"I remember sitting next to a partner in my early twenties while she commented on another man's body. The six-pack abs she noticed out loud. The way she lingered on it. I sat there silent, knowing I wasn't that—and worse, believing I never could be. That moment lived in my chest for years."

Eventually, something shifted. I stopped following advice and started studying. I dug into the actual research—not fitness magazines, not influencers, not bro-science forums. I tested principles on my own body. And slowly, things started to make sense. Not hacks. Not shortcuts. Just the real mechanisms that nobody had bothered to explain clearly—because most of the loudest voices in fitness either didn't understand them or weren't built like me.

I got down to 8-10% body fat.

Visible abs. The kind of shape I'd convinced myself wasn't possible for someone like me.

Since then, I've cut and rebuilt through premed, medical school, residency, and stretches of working multiple jobs on no sleep. The principles hold up when life gets hard. They don't require perfection. They don't require hours in the gym. They just require you to stop blaming yourself for failing at things that were never going to work in the first place.

If any of this sounds familiar—the exhaustion, the confusion, the quiet shame of trying and failing and trying again—I want you to know:

It was never you. It was the approach.

The Challenge

"I struggled with my weight and how I felt about my body for years. Tried a lot of stuff over the years. Nothing really stuck and I started thinking maybe I just wasn't someone who could get in shape."

The GymRx Difference

Working with Dave was different. The program gives structure but evolves with you—if something isn't working, you don't have to wait till the end to change it.

When severe shoulder pain made certain exercises impossible, Dave didn't just say "push through it." He sent stretches for mobility, gave alternatives, and provided video demonstrations. He problem-solves with you instead of handing you a template and leaving you to figure it out.

He doesn't judge. Maybe it's the physician in him or the psychiatrist side, but he gets the full story before jumping to conclusions. When setbacks happened, he didn't make me feel bad—he helped me figure out what happened and how to improve. That doesn't mean he won't hold you accountable—he will. But he won't make you feel like shit about it.

"He's not trying to sell you on supplements or give you false expectations. He's focused on sustainable results. No bullshit."

"After over a year of consistent work, I had results I couldn't get in years on my own. I put on real muscle. I got ripped. And I actually believe I can keep it this time."
